One very common misconception among people who are not very familiar with cars is thinking that rims and wheels are the same thing. At Stereo Depot, we have customers coming into our San Diego and El Cajon locations all of the time who use the two terms interchangeably, not knowing that rims and wheels in fact refer to different components. If you are in the market for new rims or wheels, you should probably first have an understanding of the difference between the two. Below, the wheel and rims experts at Stereo Depot outline the main differences between car rims and wheels. To learn more, give us a call in El Cajon at (619) 873-2210 or San Diego at (619) 286-1234.
WHAT ARE CAR WHEELS? The wheel is actually made of a few different parts, including the rim. Some other parts of a wheel include the spokes, center disk, and center cap. Car wheels are usually made of aluminum alloys, and come in a variety of different sizes.
WHAT ARE CAR RIMS? The rim is the outermost edge of the wheel and is the portion of the wheel that holds the tire in place. It is the “skeleton” of the tire, providing the framework needed to help the car run. Rims come in various different shapes and sizes, with many people preferring different designs and colors. Some popular variations include white rims, “spinner” rims, and black rims. Oftentimes people mistakenly use the term “rim” to refer to the center component of the wheel.
WHY ARE CAR RIMS AND WHEELS CONFUSED FOR EACH OTHER? The most likely reason for the confusion is that oftentimes the car rim and wheel is pressed or cast into one single piece of metal, meaning they arrive all in one piece. Therefore, one metal wheel can interchangeably be advertised as a rim or a wheel, since both are present in the single metal wheel. So while a rim is part of a wheel, it is not necessarily wrong to refer to a wheel as a rim. In some cases, wheels and rims come in two separate pieces, and in that case it is important to be able to differentiate between the two.
