Ok, so now that you’ve answered the question “To Tint or Not to Tint,” it’s time to make a decision about what type of film to use on your car windows. Two options you may be considering are metalized or carbon film. If so, we have an opinion on that, and we feel compelled to share it with you.
Metallized Window Tinting Film for Car Window Tinting
Metallized window film consists of four layers: an adhesive layer to bond it to your car window; a layer treated to block UV radiation; the metalized layer that reflects heat and blocks light; and then a top coat to protect it from scratching. Metallized window film looks shiny from the outside, which may make it appealing to those who are into bling and flash (not us). But…in this case, looks are deceiving. All the metal that makes your window film shiny will interfere with radio reception and cell phone and GPS transmission.
Yeah, you heard us.
Can you imagine having to roll down the window to get a signal on your phone? And what if the radio reception goes wonky at the bottom of the 9th, when the Padres are down by one and Matt Kemp is up to bat?
Worth the showy shine of metalized film? We don’t think so either.
Carbon Window Tinting Film for Cars or Trucks
We’ll start with the obvious: when your car windows are tinted with carbon film, you can talk on the phone with the windows up, and you can listen to your ball game without the radio going wonky.
Yeah, we think that should be a given, too.
Besides that, carbon film works to block out 40% of the infrared light that enters through your glass. (Compare that to the exactly 0% blocked when you have to open the window to talk on the phone.) This means, your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the temperature down, and you stay cooler. It also offers advanced UV protection for you and your car’s interior.
And, as far as we’re concerned, the dark matte-finish of the carbon film adds a classy touch you just don’t get from the other film options.
