Let’s face it – most of us are addicted to our iPhones. Whether you’re working out at the gym, waiting in line at the grocery store, lying in bed at night, or even taking a shower, your phone is within reach at all times.
Of course, being in your car is no different. San Diegans are constantly on the go and often need to use apps like Siri, Maps, and iTunes Radio while in transit. Until now, doing so safely (and legally) has been pretty much impossible. California has several laws prohibiting the use of cellphones while driving. However, new in-car technology from Apple allows you to access all the features you love without ever having to pull your iPhone out of your pocket. Introducing, Apple CarPlay.
What is Apple CarPlay?
If you have a newer car, it probably came equipped with a built-in navigation system or touchscreen interface. That’s what CarPlay is, but better. It offers a smarter, safer way to stay connected to the car by taking all of the things you want to do with your iPhone and putting them right on your car’s in-dash display. Basically, Apple is trying to eliminate the need for you to use a competing platform – and they’re doing a really good job.
How does Apple CarPlay work?
Cars equipped with CarPlay sync to your iPhone using the lightning cable. From there, CarPlay pulls all of the data from your iPhone, while charging it, and allows you to interact with it on a built-in, touchscreen interface mounted in your dashboard. But wait – there’s more. The steering wheel of CarPlay-enabled vehicles has a voice control button, which activates Siri. This technology allows you to look up the score of the baseball game or text your friends to let them know you’re on your way, all while keeping your hands at 10 and 2.
What can CarPlay do?
Pretty much anything your iPhone can do, CarPlay can do. One of the biggest advantages is being able to tell Siri to do stuff for you so you can focus on the road. She can access your contacts, make calls, return missed calls, listen to voicemails, read and send text messages, and more.
CarPlay can also stream music, podcasts, audiobooks, and iTunes radio through your car’s stereo. If you have a third-party app like Pandora, iHeartRadio or Spotify, you can pull up audio content from there, too. Again, there’s no need to even lift a finger to request your favorite track. Siri can do all the work for you using voice commands.
Last but not least, CarPlay offers navigation. Remember the days of printing out turn-by-turn directions and inevitably ending up in an empty parking lot? With CarPlay, you’ll never get lost again. By tapping into Apple’s mapping service, CarPlay can show you destinations based on recent trips, addresses pulled from your contacts, as well as traffic conditions and your estimated time of arrival. You can see all of this information on your car’s in-dash display. Or, use Siri to plot routes and get directions via voice command.
